Pain when you bite into toast or chew on one side of your mouth is easy to overlook at first. However, pain during biting indicates a change in your tooth. It could be due to several things, from a filling that sits a little too high to an infection that needs immediate treatment.

In this article, we will discuss the common causes of tooth pain while biting, methods used to diagnose the cause, and measures you can take until then.

Common Causes of Tooth Pain While Biting

  1. A Cracked Tooth

Another major source of biting pain includes cracks in the tooth, which are difficult to diagnose. In most cases, the cracks are not usually visible and cannot be discovered even with an X-ray.

Typical symptoms include a sharp pain upon biting, followed by pain when releasing the bite. Pain caused by sensitivity to cold foods is another symptom. Large fillings, grinding, or clenching the teeth increase the risk of having cracked teeth.

Cracks develop over time, and early discovery is likely to mean protection of the tooth through placing a crown on it to stop it from spreading further.

2. Tooth decay

The pain may be triggered by a deep cavity reaching the inside of the tooth. Sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods and a food trap are other signs to expect.

3. A Loose, Broken or Worn Filling or Crown

Fillings and crowns don’t last forever. If one has cracked, worn down or come loose, chewing can put pressure on the tooth underneath. Bacteria can also leak in around the edges, leading to decay beneath the restoration.

4. A Filling or Crown That Sits Too High

If your pain started soon after you had a filling or crown, the new restoration may be sitting slightly higher than your natural bite. Even a tiny difference can make the tooth sore. This is usually a quick fix: the dentist simply adjusts the surface.

5. Infection or an Abscess

When bacteria reach the nerve of a tooth, an infection can develop at the tip of the root. The tissue around the root becomes inflamed, so the tooth often feels tender to bite on or tap. It may even feel slightly “raised.” Other signs can include throbbing pain, swelling in the gum or face, a bad taste, or a small pimple-like bump on the gum.

An infected tooth won’t heal on its own. Treatment is usually root canal therapy or, in some cases, removal of the tooth.

6. Gum Disease

Advanced gum disease can loosen the support around a tooth, making it sore when you bite. A localised gum infection can cause tenderness too, often with swelling or bleeding around one tooth.

7. Teeth Grinding or Clenching

Grinding or clenching, often during sleep, puts heavy pressure on your teeth. Over time, this can leave several teeth feeling tender, especially first thing in the morning. It can also cause jaw muscle aches and worn tooth surfaces.

8. Sinus Pressure

The roots of the upper back teeth sit close to the sinuses. When you have a sinus infection or congestion, pressure can make these teeth ache when you bite. This often affects several teeth on one side and tends to worsen when you bend forward. It usually eases as the sinus problem clears, but it’s worth having the teeth checked to rule out a dental cause.

9. Wisdom Teeth

A partly erupted wisdom tooth can trap food and bacteria under the gum flap covering it. The gum becomes swollen and painful, and biting on that side can be uncomfortable.

How We Find the Cause

Because so many conditions cause similar symptoms, finding the source is the most important step. During your appointment, we may:

  • Ask when the pain started, what triggers it and how long it lasts
  • Examine the tooth and surrounding gums
  • Use a bite test, asking you to bite on a small instrument one cusp at a time to pinpoint a crack
  • Gently tap the teeth to check for inflammation around the root
  • Test how the tooth responds to cold
  • Take X-rays to look for decay, infection or bone changes
  • Check your bite and look for signs of grinding

What You Can Do in the Meantime

Until you become visible, these tips may be helpful to you:

  • Masticate on the opposite side from your abscessed tooth
  • Stay clear of hard and sticky foods that irritate an abscessed tooth
  • Eat neither excessively hot nor cold foods if they cause you pain
  • Gargle with lukewarm saltwater to ease irritated gum tissues
  • If necessary, take over-the-counter painkillers according to the label instructions
  • Don’t apply aspirin or any other pills in your mouth, as it can cause burns

These tips will help temporarily. If the pain disappears, it does not mean that everything is fine. Sometimes a problem persists despite the pain disappearing, as the tooth nerve becomes dead.

When Is It Urgent?

Seek dental care promptly if your pain is severe, ongoing or getting worse, or if you’ve broken a tooth. Go to a hospital emergency department or call 000 if you have:

  • Swelling spreading across your face, jaw or neck
  • Fever and feeling generally unwell
  • Difficulty swallowing, breathing or opening your mouth

These can be signs of a spreading infection, which needs urgent medical attention.

How Pain When Biting Is Treated

Treatment depends entirely on the cause. It may involve:

  • Adjusting a high filling or crown
  • Replacing a worn or broken filling
  • A crown to hold a cracked tooth together and protect it
  • Root canal treatment for an infected or inflamed nerve
  • Gum treatment for gum disease
  • A custom night guard for grinding
  • Removing a problem wisdom tooth

As a dentist in Brighton families have relied on for over 50 years, we see pain on biting almost every week. In our experience, the earlier it’s checked, the simpler the treatment usually is.

Early intervention in dental care can shape a child’s smile and overall oral health for years to come. Pediatric orthodontic treatment focuses on identifying and addressing dental issues in children at an early age. Acting sooner rather than later can prevent complex problems, reduce treatment time, and build lifelong habits for healthy teeth. Understanding the benefits of starting early makes it clear why pediatric orthodontic care is more than just cosmetic.

Improved Jaw and Bite Alignment

Pediatric orthodontic treatment can guide the growth of the jaw and correct bite misalignments before they worsen. Early adjustments can prevent overcrowding and uneven bite patterns that often require invasive procedures later. When the jaw develops correctly from a young age, it reduces strain on teeth and gums and promotes better oral function. This proactive approach ensures that alignment issues are addressed while growth is still flexible, making treatment smoother and more effective.

Prevention of Future Dental Problems

Treating misaligned teeth early reduces the risk of cavities, gum disease, and uneven wear. Pediatric orthodontic treatment allows dentists to detect and manage potential issues before they escalate into serious complications. Children benefit from fewer dental emergencies and avoid the stress of extensive corrective procedures in adolescence. Preventive care not only protects oral health but also saves time, discomfort, and cost in the long run.

Pediatric Orthodontic Enhance Self-Esteem and Confidence

Children with properly aligned teeth often experience a boost in self-confidence. Modern pediatric orthodontic treatment addresses cosmetic and functional concerns, giving children the courage to smile without hesitation. Positive dental experiences at an early age can foster healthy habits and a lifelong appreciation for oral care. A confident smile can influence social interactions, school experiences, and even early professional development.

Simplified Orthodontic Procedures Later

Starting treatment early can make future dental work simpler and shorter. Pediatric orthodontic treatment often reduces the need for extractions, jaw surgery, or prolonged braces in the teenage years. By guiding teeth and jaw growth early, dentists can avoid more invasive procedures that are harder on both children and families. Early intervention sets the stage for more predictable outcomes and less complicated adjustments in adolescence.

Support for Proper Speech and Chewing

Misaligned teeth or jaw irregularities can affect a child’s ability to chew and speak properly. Pediatric orthodontic treatment helps align teeth so that speech patterns develop naturally and chewing is efficient. Addressing these issues early prevents the frustration and social challenges that can accompany speech or eating difficulties. Children can enjoy a better quality of life while developing essential oral functions with guidance from early orthodontic care.

Improved Long-Term Oral Health

Investing in pediatric orthodontic treatment lays the foundation for strong oral health throughout life. Correct alignment supports easier cleaning, reducing plaque buildup and the risk of tooth decay. It also encourages consistent dental hygiene practices, as children learn to care for their teeth effectively from a young age. Long-term benefits include fewer dental interventions, healthier gums, and a smile that lasts decades.

Conclusion

Early pediatric orthodontic treatment offers a multitude of benefits, from improving jaw alignment and preventing future dental problems to boosting confidence and supporting proper speech. Acting early simplifies later procedures and promotes a foundation of lifelong oral health. Parents who invest in early orthodontic care give their children the gift of a healthy, confident smile and a smoother path to dental wellness. Early intervention truly sets the stage for lasting benefits that extend far beyond childhood.
